Math and Motion

Math:  We did a yellow review sheet that forced us to think about fractions, factors, multiples... from the beginning of the year.

Homework:  Finish pink sheet with fraction equivalents on it.

Science:  We entered speed definition and formulas on our posters.  Students have to put the definition in their own words and draw a sketch that helps them remember what it means.  Speed= distance/ time

We watched the Usain Bolt world records on you tube... see earlier post below to watch it.
SPEED! Usain Bolt is reallly reallllly fast!

Motion Poster and Fraction Action!

Math:  We reviewed some fraction skills from book one to prepare for state testing Monday.
Homework:  Top half of pink sheet with fraction equivalents for decimals and percents.
Science:  We finished the Prezi (see the link on yesterday's post) and started our "Motion" posters.
The motion poster is worth 6o points and will be mostly completed in class.  Students got back their acid and bases foldables today.

Associative and Commutative Property and Wisdom Teeth

Math:  Warm-up, homework stamp, partner check on homework.
How many out of 8 did you get correct?
Watched two Brainpops on Associative and Commutative Properties.
Took Gridbook notes on Lesson 5.
Worked on a big worksheet with a partner, I corrected it and we started homework.

Homework due Thursday: page 21 (1,3,6,8, and 17-25 ALL)  show work.

Science:  We looked at our pics from yesterday and read "Why it works" on the blog.

Grades have been updated, but anything turned in Thur or Fri won't be graded until after Spring Break.
I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled Thursday and will be gone for two days.

Testing Acids and Bases Experiment

Math homework Page 16 (1,2, 4-18 Even)  Show all steps and all work.
Safety First!  Mrs Stolp in her safety goggles!  Every student had to wear them today!
We tested 12 substances to see how they reacted with an acid base indicator.
Students used eye droppers to drop the substance onto a drop of cabbage juice to see the color change.
Acids were bright pink and purple, bases turned green and blue.

How does it work?

Some substances are classified as either an acid or a base. Think of acids and bases as opposites - acids have a low pH and bases have a high pH. For reference, water (a neutral) has a pH of 7 on a scale of 0-14. Scientists can tell if a substance is an acid or a base by means of an indicator. An indicator is typically a chemical that changes color if it comes in contact with an acid or a base.
As you can see, the purple cabbage juice turns red when it is mixed with something acidic and turns green when it mixes with something basic. Red cabbage juice is considered to be an indicator because it shows us something about the chemical composition of other substances.
What is it about cabbage that causes this to happen? Red cabbage contains a water-soluble pigment called anthocyanin that changes color when it is mixed with an acid or a base. The pigment turns red in acidic environments with a pH less than 7 and the pigment turns bluish-green in alkaline (basic) environments with a pH greater than 7.
Red cabbage is just one of many indicators that are available to scientists. Some indicators start out colorless and turn blue or pink, for example, when they mix with a base. If there is no color change at all, the substance that you are testing is probably neutral, just like water.

Science Experiment Tomorrow

Math:  Minute 5 warm-up, Grid book notes on Book 3 Lesson 3.  Homework Page 12(2-16) (22-28) evens.  Must show all steps in order.  Students can fit the problem in an upside down triangle as shown in class.  Must copy the problem,  do exponents, mult or div, then add or subtract.

Science:  Corrected part of Chapter 5 test,  Prepared for Cabbage Lab Testing tomorrow.

Fun:  We ate Valentine Candy during our warm- up and watched this silly video  after our break to help us remember "Order of O"

Speed = Distance / Time

Math:  Warm-up, homework stamped.
Science:  Speed = Distance/Time.  We collected data on our walking and running speed for 50 feet.  We found the mean of three trials and then calculated these averages into miles per hour.

Page 4 and 8

Math homework:  page 4 and page 8 (2-20) evens.

Science:  Tomorrow we calculate our walking and running speeds in miles per hour!

Team 7 Got a perfect score and $ to the student store!

Math:  Returned Book 2 and Checked out Book 3!  Took Block 3 and Circles Test today.  Anyone who missed the test today will have to make it up during Wednesday study hall;  come see me during flex.
We also completed our first "Seventh grade Minute"  warm-up.

Science:  Practice Test in the book for Chapter 5, and Video Quiz in Teams.  Team 7 got every single question right and earned $.50 each free at student store.

Tomorrow;  Book 3 Block 1 pretest, discuss current OAKS state assessment scores and Science Chapter 5 test.  Foldables will be turned in after test.

Miguel brought in these cool rocks and told us about them.  Some had crystalline structures, one was really green and several contained quartz. Thanks for making science interesting today!

Math:  Minute 100!  Wow!  We celebrated by taking a peek back at what Minute 1 looked like... omg;  we have learned a lot!
Corrected homework.  Some people are still getting mixed up about radius and diameter.

Remember 3.14 X Diameter = C

Page 137-138 (1-6 and 13-19) all.  We completed and corrected in class.

Science:  Chapter 5 Crossword puzzle and Overview of Chapter 5 worksheet in class.  We will correct and review with these Monday.

Fun:  New seats assigned.

Monday:  Book 2 Final Test!  Includes Block 3 and circles.  Video Quiz for Ch 5 Science Monday.
New math books Monday... yay Algebra!  Next week we will be looking at our OAKS scores and planning for next round of testing.

Parts of a circle image

Circles

Math:  Warm up # 98... we are almost to number 100!  Awesome;  we get to try out "7th grade warm-ups" next.

The class corrected Block 3 review ( in the book) with partners assigned by Mrs. Stolp, then corrected it together in class.  How well  students performed on this review activity is a good indicator of how they will do on the block test next week.

Circles Lesson: Drew and labeled parts of a circle. Circumference is how far a horse gallops around a field "circumference, circumference, circumference..." .  I'd "rather run the radius"!   The d d d diameter was drawn in d d dark blue and is the whole d d distance across the circle.  Center point, chord and pi also defined.  See students circles with formulas in their binders.

Homework:  Lesson 20  selected problems in the book.  If you're not sure do them all.

Fun:  We got in a circle (making Donald the center point) and "threw"a ball across different parts of the circle.

Block 3 Test next week

Math: Warm-up 96;  Corrected parts of Lesson 17 and 18 worksheet.  Homework Block 3 Review 2-32 evens, 40-64 evens.  It seems like lots, but the problems are pretty simple.  We are preparing for the Block 3 Test next week.  We start circles tomorrow.

Science:  Read Section 3 and got definitions, signs, and examples for phys and chem changes into foldables.  Chapter 5 test coming next week.
